The Day the Fascist Snowflakes Came to Cancel a Black Lady and a Brown Dude

It began, strangely enough, a noted leftist journalist, who once used to be widely admired. He singled out two minorities — Imani Gandy, a well-known Twitter personality, and, well me. Imani made a joke: “Petition to put white cis dudes on a barge and float them out to sea.” I said, irritated by the fact that the rich white world is 16% of the the globe’s population but hoarding the vast majority of its vaccines, “Eff off already, white people.” He took pics of those things, and said: “The ‘anti-racist’ advocates are speaking out today with particular righteousness.”

CPAC Was Trump’s Declaration of Victory Over the Republican Party

There’s been a notion put forth by pundits over the last few weeks. There is, they tell us, a “civil war” going on in the Republican Party. That myth should now be lain to a peaceful rest. The events of the last few days, at CPAC, are an alarming and blaring warning. There’s no civil war in the GOP. It’s Trump’s party now.

CPAC was Trump’s declaration of victory over the Republican Party. He might not have won the election — but he did win a series of powerful consolation prizes. The GOP. The backing of a supermajority of Republicans

This is Why CPAC Was So Frightening

If I’d told you a decade ago that at the Conservative Party Conference of 2021, speakers would be belching lies and raging hate from a stage shaped like a Nazi SS symbol, after which attendees went to worship a giant golden statue of Donald Trump

Would you have believed me?

Like any sane person, you’ve probably been equal parts horrified, amused, and disgusted by CPAC. But what is it that’s so frightening about it? I’m going to share some ugly truths with you. The kind that you know, but you might not be able to quite articulate yet. …

The American Right is Hardening Into a Full-Blown Nazi Party

Let me try to make sense of what’s happening to the right wing in America. It’s as simple as it is chilling. American fascism is now becoming American Nazism. Yes, really. There is a big difference between the two. Fascism is an angry teenager, and Nazism is a bureaucrat organising a mass atrocity. Nazism is what happens when fascism grows up — and that’s what’s happening in America right now. Making matters worse, as I’ll come to, the Dems are fumbling in the background, letting fascism’s embryo reach Nazism’s adulthood with barely a whimper.

Let me try to explain.

It’s Time to Stop Making Excuses For How Bad at Politics the Dems Really Are

There’s a strange thing happening. Take the course the last day or two. The Democrats caved on the minimum wage. Then Biden announced an airstrike on Syria. And then Jen Psaki, the White House Press Secretary, took to the stage to defend “detainment centers.”

That wasn’t the strange thing. It’s how people, many of them, reacted. They defended the Democrats. They made excuse after excuse. Apologia after apologia. My friends, let me make a harsh point — and you can decide if its unfair.

Stop making excuses for the Democrats.

What Grade Would You Give the Democrats For Their First Month in Power? Here’s Mine

I’m sorry. Accept my apology in advance. I’m going to say something ugly, and many of you aren’t going to like it. But it needs to be said.

The Democrats are blowing it.

Now, I’m going to come back to “but it’s only been 36 days.” I promise. And you can get me after that if you want. But first…let me make my case.

This is a crucial, crucial period for America. The Democrats have two years — just two — to thwart the rise of American fascism all over again. They have to get stuff done. Two years is…

The Dems Are Off to a Slow, Muddled, Uninspiring Start. And That’s Not a Good Thing.

They’re conflicted, these days, my feelings about the Dems. I hold out hope that they might be a little bit better than they have been. And hope, as we all know, or should, is the last resort of the powerless.

I’m not asking a lot from the Dems. I have a number of basic key issues that I want to see progress made on. They’re basic in the, well, sense that they’re the most fundamental things necessary to bring America within even shouting distance of being a functioning society. …

We’re A Dying Civilization on a Dying Planet, and We’re Going to Have to Learn a Whole New Way of Life to Survive

We are now entering an age of death. I call it the Great Dying. It will last the next several decades, and it will define the rest of our lives. We are not prepared for this age of death. We lack even the vocabulary to grasp it, much less the psychologies to cope with it, much less the social norms and values to prevent it, much less the economies to forestall it.

I understand that to a certain kind of person, usually an American, that will sound alarmist and hyperbolic and overblown and all the rest of it.

So let…

How America Normalized Death

What do the following things have in common?

  1. America’s astonishing, gruesome death toll of half a million at the hands of a needless pandemic that was allowed to spiral out of control. That’s more American deaths than in the World Wars.
  2. Five people shot during a violent seeming coup attempt at the Capitol. Two more who committed suicide. A majority of Republicans who back all that, and more who do every day. A leader who hasn’t apologised for it, and a Senate who didn’t convict him of it.
  3. Millions going without water and power in Texas, many dying of hypothermia

How American Politics Descended Into the Tragedy and Farce of Self-Destruction

As you and I watch the grim spectacle of Ted Cruz, Senator from Texas, jetting back from a vacation to Cancun, since, well, his failed state is a place going largely without electricity, heating, or water, a question needs to be asked: why do Americans choose such bad leaders?

To the rest of the world, it’s hilarious, tragic, and bizarre in equal measure. Americans don’t live in an authoritarian state…yet. They live in a failing democracy. They still have the power, however weakened, to choose their leaders. Billions of people around the world don’t. And look at who they choose.
